Construction Safety Tips for Summer

Sunny, humid days call for proper safety practices in order to keep your construction teams safe from the intense heat. All employees should understanding and practice the following:

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Supply an ample amount of cold water on job sites and encourage your team to take consistent water breaks throughout the day. In addition to water, provide beverages that are rich in electrolytes, granola bars, and fruit to give your team an energy boost.

Sun Protection

Encourage your crew to wear light-colored clothing made of loose, breathable fabric. Provide sunscreen, hats/visors, and a tent onsite if possible.

Proper Schedules

Schedule for workdays to begin during early morning hours to avoid the intense heat during the afternoon. Plan for one-hour lunch breaks to occur during the hottest periods of the day, between noon and 2 p.m.

Heat-Related Health Risks

All construction workers should understand the symptoms of a heat stroke or dehydration. If crew members experience any of the following, they should be brought into the shade and given proper medical assistance:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fast breathing
  • Pale and clammy skin

Safety procedures during the summer may seem instinctual, but workers may need a reminder to put their health ahead of their job.
